Some twenty feet away,
on the bricks of a house a creeper lay.
some twenty feet away
by the open window where she lay.
For all the dawns she never longed,
the passing winds to sing a song.
The prince of night with a crown of pearls,
at times she dreamt would ease her pain.
In her heart she kept yet never wept,
for the leaves that shred and siliently left.
The ivy wine had none to choose,
the skeleton vine had one to lose.
the night she knew would never say
to the dawn how much she wished to stay
the pale blue colour of the sky was true
the leaf that clung to the wine was true
the wind and the rain tried in vain
never did it ripe never did it fall
the litle girl her life she gained
and the last leaf fell never again

This poem is dedicated to O.Henry for his great short story 'The last leaf'
