when people go insane gods hide in shame

'The Land of the insane' This was the beautiful name given to Kerala a hundred years ago by Swami Vivekananda on his first visit to Kerala. On November 12 1892 while on his way to kanyakumari he had to alight at shornur railway station as there were no railway lines beyond that. His friend and follower Mr.Sreenivas iyer waited with his palki to welcome Swami to his home at Trichur. He sat abode the palki enjoying the beauty of this heaven on earth. The lush greenery and clustered coconut palms took away his heart, and he must have muttered 'Gods own country' Unknowingly. The palki carriers as they swung their bodies in motion to their synchronizing tune alerting the people of the arrival of a high-caste person. At a place called Mullakkara, swamiji happened to witness how a man was being pushed to keep away from the road. When asked he was told that it was a custom prevailing in Malabar or northern Kerala that a man of a low caste should hide himself if a man of a hi

'Mothers keep an eye'

All mothers out there working at home or at office. keep one eye open if not both and one ear closed so that what you hear causes less harm to your heart and mind.Dont let your conscience one day ask you "what a mother you are'.I wouldnt ask you to not believe in your children but not wholly.Gone are the days of your childhood when you followed your route of home-school-home or home-college-home.We grew up with certain ethics and principles and we do wish our children imbibe them and grow likewise. But our little babies are in a complete different era.In trying to keep pace with the fast growing and revolutionizing world. These little kids have little idea about family values(forget traditional) or cultures. Internet and mobiles are the two major culprits.Fixing dates and places of meeting at Malls, theatres and parentless homes.Mainly flats because its a better option with no eyes and ears following you except the watchman who sticks on to his job by just' watching'

The women who made heaven on earth

Talent is what you possess and genius is what possesses you' Here meet this women who gave meaning to her life by planting more than 300 trees. She carried pails of water on her head and shoulder for distance of four kilometers to water the trees planted by her and her husband chikkaiah.Thikkamma was the reciepeint of many prestigious awards(National citizens award-1995,Indira priyadarshini vrikshmitra award-1997,veera chakra prashasti award-1997 and a certificate of honour from the welfare department( W&C) karnataka and a certificate of appreciation from the Indian Institute of wood science and technology. All these were feathers of her crown with which she grew to fame but none of these provided her what she needed the most in her oldage.Though we say trees provide us with shelter. tikkamma struggled with her lonliness till the awards and certificates and trees blurred from her vision and she flew from her heaven on earth to the garden of eden.

May humanity be your goal

'All the world is a stage and all men and women merely players'.truly said by shakespere. The only difference being the players who could be categorised as rich, very rich, poor and very poor.I hope this letter would fly to you like a white dove and fulfill my duty of creating awareness of the very poor who happen to leave your state and live a life of dirt and stink in other states becoming a blotch to your famed name and a shame to your fast growing infrastructure and technology. Art of progress is to preserve order amid change and to preserve change amid order. Your state which is now on the treshold of topping the charts of indian states could make your citizens proud and for others a role model to follow. But there is one very important thing that to my knowledge should be given due importance and needs an immediate solution.only then can you be called a superior state in the true sense.Kerela which is called gods own country and which has an 100 % l

Listen to them

Life is always like the two sides of a coin.Happiness and sorrows take turns rolling into your life uninvitingly at different stages.Thanking god for the former and cursing him for the latter. We at times of miseries, detest our lives and forget to convince and cajole ourselves that its just the other side of the coin, and its just an interval. Those are the times we should remember a few hundreds who get to see only the darker side of life. They are banned by the laws of god to see the brighter side of life. They have no place in any institution, neither gods nor mans. They have no homes,no schools. They are not part of globalisation, revolution, resolutions and technologies.of which we talk of proudly.Yes they do contribute in global-warming,burning tons and tons of clothes thrown to them by large hearted people mainly done to clean their houses. When our children are entering into a digital world there are these children of the street who have not seen the doors of a school.Get a little cl

Give 30 mts of your life

With obesity decreasing life expectancy by nearly 10 years and contributing to increasing risks of developing type 2 diabetes and hypertension, scientists in Britain are trying to understand the factors which turn people obese.Give 30 mts of your life and MAKE EXCERCISE AND YOGA a part of your life. It's being suggested that in not too distant future, obesity could also be the leading cause of cancer worldwide besides becoming a cause of liver failure.

Raise working age for children

The ILO has lowered the working age of children to 14.Is it not too early an age to become independent. A via-ble die-able age when money in hand could land you in unadvisable places. The ILO chief technical advisor MP Joseph added saying they could do safe jobs.If one happen to exclude the unsafe jobs we would be left with a few.Introducing the education rights act and simultaneously lowering the age for working would leave much options for the children to opt out of studying at 14,which means more and more children would only have a ssc certificate. It could have been increased to 16 so that a minimum 12th pass was assured. He also added ILO was commited to improving the diginity of workers which comes under the purview of labour laws.May that be a relief to the thousands of labourers spread out all over kerela who are facing harsh circumstances. The education of their children being most effected hope some measures would be taken to ensure schoolings for the children of the labourers

Indias toilet revolution

At the end of the second millennium, an American newsmagazine organised a worldwide survey to find out which invention had the greatest impact on human beings. Neither James watt's steam engine nor Edison's electric bulb made it to the coveted slot, grabbled easily by the flush toilet. If anything, this shows how importantant the toilet is to human civilisation. But in india, a majority of the population_68.3 crore_ still has no access to toilet.Which means 58% of the population sits in open and closes their eyes and says"nobody can see me". We could proudly bring ourselves close to only ethiopia which are little worser than us, 60%. China which began developing like india after 1947 stole a march over india in terms of sanitation. Only 4% of chinese closes their eyes openly and says no body can see them. Many countries who are far behind india in terms of development are better positioned, they can sit with their eyes open in closed vaults. The invention of trains h

Just a little could do a lot

The evacuation of the emigrants from the manapatiparambu is by and large a major violation of human rights. The complaints of the residents is genuine and a solution for the menace was a must but before voluntry action a thought should have been given to the little children who are not defaulters and could not be blamed for the state they are in.They are temporary settlers and if not in one place they would make it somewhere else in the city. The authorities need to take stringent steps to either ban them from entering our state or make an arrangement to settle them in certain areas with all the basic amenties so that they do not become a nuisance to the surrounding or a setback to a developing city like kochi.Education for their children should be given due importance so that the coming generation could bring about a change ending to their prevailing nomadic era. My first encounter with these nomad kids had really taken away my heart, I am a teacher of the poor and not satisfied with

Yet Another Birthday

A day that I cherish more than any other day.Yes 28th sept. The most luxurious and beautiful gift given by nature to indians first and then to the world. Why doubt?who else and what else it could be than the most loved, honoured, respected, admired and listened.LATA MANGESHKAR.I have spend half of my life listening to her songs and if god permits would like to spend another 50 years doing the same.

The sky is the limit

Compromise makes a nice umbrella but a poor roof;it is a temperory expedition. Here, meet Dr subadra she had neither with all the compromises she made to walk up the glorious ladders of education. It surely must not have been a bed of roses in the yearly sixties to be honoured with a doctorate. Now at 80 when she turns back veiwing that path of glory she is left with a mixed feeling because at the end she has no home and no relatives to shelter her.The waiting room of a railway station surely did give her space to reminise her reflecting past. Daughter of a school master K.keshavan pillai and elder of the two sisters, subadra was very keen on pursuing the same proffession and became a hindi teacher at the age of 18 and continued her studies further by graduating with high marks and taught at different schools. Her heart was always at gaining more education which ultimately reached her to the highest esteem of a doctrate in 1962 from the kerela university. And t

'Woman' The wealth of india

Beauty lies deep within the skin thats how the sayings of all the miss universe, worlds and planets goes. But they wouldnt reach that life changing platforms if their beauties were skin deep and awful outside. The magic of beauty lies in the 90% 0f their exposed parts from top to toe. They go to become the the branded icons and ambassadors of our country. We call ourselves cultured and traditional and strip to the minimial before a billion eyes receiving all the applause and appreciations for the curves.Rising upto the occassion is the indian culture but alas here for being awarded the highest grandeur for a women you fall to your lowest. It is not just enough to say you are a proud indian it has to be shown in your deeds as well. Our beautiful women walk in two peice with all the eyes stuck ofcourse not on their faces, and they are then escorted through the red carpet posing to be the idols and inspirations of womanhood. There need to be a change. judgement of beauty really needs to be skin

Still beating on the crease

Those were the days of the fifty's when the game was not for him a fantasy, Even as the sun above erupted, he swirled, bowled and swept. like a prey escapes a clench, the ball would from his fist. Now at an age only sixty one, he lies confined and bed-ridden. Watching the empty ceiling in peace, his heart still beating on the crease. I would like to dedicate these few lines to mr.Muhammed Ibrahim.A great cricketer of kerela Ranji trophy.

Insight

They who see may never see, all that I see. The brightest skies, and all their cries. That rains and pours, like waves and soars. The rising sun, that melts for fun. On the crowed lots with nothing it owns. the colorless wails of boys and girls. The highway bands, that wheels with life. The body and souls, in a music flows. unto black rivers, of blood and spit Bestowing upon me, an inner-sight to see.

'English' the need of the hour

In kerela there is always an overall change in the education system as the govt.changes.Year by year there is improverisation.Teachers have a friendly attitude, they allow children to interact more, and let us not forget to highlight the liberal attitude of the management to such an extent that there are no restrictions towards the usage of mother tongue during any period. so BOTTOM LINE IS ' no fine for maathrubhasha'.A peep into their answer papers and you will begun to learn alphabets and words like never before.Only the teacher could get better connection than the student who might have written it.You get to read malayalam in english'His mother him beat).THE STATE IMPROVES ITS EDUCATION BUT WHEN WILL THE FATE OF OUR CHILDEREN IMPROVE.All these children of the malayala bhumi wish in their hearts and minds to write better english and talk in a more better way.But the lesser the fees the lesser the input. They all grow with this little knowledge of other languages which puts

"CALL THE PARENT"

Years after when one walks down the memory lane of the school corridors, you get a warm, nostalgic feeling full of gratitude to the teachers and principal. You can never forget them.your first teacher with whom you stepped into the wonderland of alphabets and numbers. You are binded to her mentally for a life time .Then education was much like a little boat sailing smoothly into a huge sea with no hazzels,no brainstorms and not just achieving material goals.children did according to their ability. There were kids who got 5paise as pocket money and those who got one rupee also.Education was not a suffering to the parent and a sickness to the child. Now a days as everything stands on a globalising verge,so does the education system that seems more like battlefeilds, where the principal is the commandant, teachers the ministers and students the warriors. competing with each other, marks being the ultimate goal.A twelve year lasting war. The CBSE and ICSE,The higher strata of education. From bags

desperate lives

We are all desperate, for something we wish. our minds and souls, all apparatus craving often for things they dont get. our heart is just another widget, with eyes and ears of a vulture. We are all desperate wish our minds and souls were separate. when one wished the other deterred when one cried the other smiled, when one was hurt the other kept fine. why eyes and heart they possessed, why tears and blood they poured, for nothing but wishes desperate.

LIFE JUST GOES ON

Swapna and prem were a very happy couple. The arrival of their first baby gave them much delight like any other parent.Happiness knew no bound with the arrival of their second child, who also happened to be a boy.Their family was complete and before them lay only the future of their kids. Two years passed by peacefully, fortunately or unfortunately this mother of two concieved again.Things began to change as her physical self.love between the husband and wife began to diminish and vanished into thin air.Swapna gave birth to twins, that too boys and it was a moment for rejoiciing and she surely was happy though bringing up four would be a mammoth task.On the far end of the road stood the father, unhappy and not ready to accept the twins as his children. One fine morning she was awakened by the chirping of the birds but with a sad note. She found that her husband and her two elder sons were missing, grieving through her disbelief and shock it took her sometime to real

cricket a shame

At the MCA(chennai)from behind one of the glass chambers an old cricket ball though pityfully gazes at passers- by with a pride it owes for creating history during the 60's for sizzling across the boundries for a maiden sixer on a new pavilion. The batsman being the long forgotton mr.Muhammed Ibrahim who was a firebrand bowler as well. From 1968 to 1970 he stood like a strong pillar in the kerela ranji team. The man with a magic wand on his hand. Now at 61 and bedridden since 10 years awaits tirelessly for the KCA to show mercy on his pathetic state and come forward with help.If A man who spend a decade for cricket could be neglected in such a manner, it shows the more pathetic state of a sport being ranked as no one in name, fame and money.Hope it is an eye-opener to the BCCI.

Some twenty feet away, on the bricks of a house a creeper lay. some twenty feet away by the open window where she lay. For all the dawns she never longed, the passing winds to sing a song. The prince of night with a crown of pearls, at times she dreamt would ease her pain. In her heart she kept yet never wept, for the leaves that shred and siliently left. The ivy wine had none to choose, the skeleton vine had one to lose. the night she knew would never say to the dawn how much she wished to stay the pale blue colour of the sky was true the leaf that clung to the wine was true the wind and the rain tried in vain never did it ripe never did it fall the litle girl her life she gained and the last leaf fell never again This poem is dedicated to O.Henry for his great short story 'The last leaf'

A NEW LEASE OF LIFE

Image
This is 'silky',the pomeranian at AVA(A voice for animals).once upon a time it mustve been as its name sounds but when prasanna found it on the roadside its breed couldnt be identified, most of its fur was burnt and it was barely able to crawl. prasanna called her friend Baby and took silky to a vet and got it treated, with a very slim chance of survival it fought back to life.Thy spent 12000 rs.from their own pocket to save it . Once AVA got a call from a pet owner saying he wanted to give away his one year old pet because it was no more a baby and that he had got it as a toy for his son. A goat owner who had left his goat tied in the rain for four days.AVA has countless such incidents to narrate and many more of pets being left on highways after they get old and sick. What a pity. people forget that they are living creatures as well.Prasanna and baby have embraced this challenging job of sheltering abandoned and injured animals from the streets to give them a new lease of li

RIDING FOR A CAUSE

Image
The loss is unrepairable, unimaginable and still u have to go on,more stronger than before if you have a cause. This is Mr. kurian who had to face the most difficult moment of his life when he lost his little son of age 16 two years back. Stanley George died with a wish of donating his organs to all those in need and his father made it true by donating his eyes, kidneys and liver. The pain of his lost son will take a longer time to heal but he mustve felt lighter at heart when he could see his son live through five very needy people. This donation has changed his life and this has become his cause for living in memory of his son. mr kurian will make a 4500km ride on his motorbike from kanyakumari to kashmir awakening the people and making them aware of this noble cause of donating organs .let us all put together our hearts and wish him all success in his venture.
